Last Sunday we were happy to support and participate in the first #Zibel clean up which was of Fomm ir-Rih. #Zibel is a community of people with one goal – clearing up Malta’s natural areas from pollution so we can appreciate the true beauty of our island. The movement was initiated by Sam Degaetano and Andrew Schembri. A couple of guys who have had enough with the constant interaction with pollution when trying to enjoy themselves outdoors; let’s face it, no one wants to go for a walk on a beach filled with garbage. They truly want this to change so decided to take matters into their own hands and decided to start organising clean ups around Malta.
We gathered, on Sunday, in the square of Bahrija for the first clean up. By 10 o’clock we were heading down to Fomm ir-Rih. Since there are three pebble beaches along the coast, we were split up into three groups. Each group was given a team leader, a bunch of garbage bags and gloves before setting off on their mission. The next few hours were filled with picking up and sorting trash, chatting with new people and hauling about 500kg of trash up the cliff side. After all the hard work was done, we sat down together and ate pizza – courtesy of New Yorks Best and listened to the contemporary rock music of The Ranch. It was the perfect ending to a great day and we had the opportunity to enjoy the, now, beautiful scenery. The event was captured on picture and video thanks to Niki Caruana and Gianluca Pace. Head over to their Facebook page to see them and join the community.
